Letter: Punishment must fit the crime

So at long last, after pleading innocence and drawing out a trial to escape the consequences of his vile actions, the murderer Alexander Kozak stood in a courtroom and addressed his killing of Andrea Farrington: 'I was selfish and took her away from her family ... I took her life and that's a truth I must live with.”

If our state had the death penalty, that would not be the case.

From the beginning, the case against Kozak was light years beyond any 'reasonable doubt.” He shot an unarmed woman in the back three times. Andrea Farrington is dead at the age of 20. Kozak will spend the rest of his natural life housed, fed and cared for by the State of Iowa. He won.

Punishment must fit the crime. We should change our laws. Justice must prevail. Right now, it isn't.
