Cedar Rapids Jefferson used a stingy defense and timely turnovers by Waterloo West to sneak away with a come-from-behind, 21-17, prep football victory Friday night in Waterloo.
The Wahawks (4-2, 1-1) scored on their initial possession on a 34-yard pitch and catch from Cade Dodd to Tanner Pollock.
The J-Hawks defense made their first big play moments later when Kyler Bell picked off an errant throw and returned it 68 yards to tie the game.
After the Wahawks settled in and built a 17-7 lead late in the second quarter, the J-Hawks once again relied on a big play for help.
Quarterback Noah Vawter scrambled free on a draw play and went untouched for an 80-yard score closing the gap at the half. 17-14.
The J-Hawks had shown little on offense, mustering just one first down and had negative yards on the board.
The defense rose once again late in the game when Jacob Thompson picked off another pass and returned it to the Wahawk 8-yard line. Two plays later, Vawter broke through the line for a 2-yard score and a 21-17 lead.
The defense never rested as they forced a fumble late, stalling a Wahawks drive and sealing the victory.
