Merle N. Merritt, 90, of Fairfax, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John XXIII Cath-olic Church, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: 1:30 p.m. at Linwood Cemetery, Norway, with military honors by American Legion Post 234. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday before the service. Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is serving the family.
Merle is survived by his first cousins, Lois Nichols, Carol Alderdyce, Alan Thomas and Delores Keiper; longtime friend, Carol Sorg of Fairfax; her children, Michael Sorg of Marion, Christopher (Becky) Sorg of Swisher, Daniel Sorg of Fairfax, David (Mindy) Sorg of Cedar Rapids, Alisa Sorg of Chicago and Theresa (Jesse) Michalec of Fairfax; their children, Carson, Emma, Landon, Carlie, Benjamin and Khloe; and longtime friends and farming associates, Jay (Kim) Montague, and their children, Dustin, Candace, Lacey, Nathan and Levi.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Corrine; first cousin, Gary Melburg; and several other cousins.
Merle was born March 30, 1924, in Norway, the son of Scott and Stella (Melberg) Merritt. He attended Norway High School, graduating in 1941. From high School he went to serve in the United States Army. Merle spent his life working as a farmer.
Merle loved to travel and learning about history, especially World War II.
He was very social and kind, and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John XXIII Church or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
