ROBERT R. FINNEY
Marion
Robert Raymond Finney passed away at BeeHive Homes Assisted Care Center in Green Valley, Ariz., on July 17, 2017.
Bob was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Leona (Alby) Finney. Bob's father's second wife was Nellie Horn. Bob has a younger brother,
Jon (Debbie) Finney of Keosauqua, Iowa, and a sister, Marsha (Bruce) Swanson of Mountain View, Hawaii.
Bob attended high school in Douds-Leando, Iowa, and graduated in 1950. For two years following high school he worked in the family grocery store in Leando. In January 1952, he joined the Navy and served until December 1955. He attended Parsons College in Fairfield, where he received a degree in education.
Bob was united in marriage to Helen Hootman in 1950. They adopted and raised two children, Joseph and Gina. Bob married Nancy Van Fleet in 1983 and enjoyed raising their son, Jason. Bob was joined in marriage to his current wife, Inge Drews Potter, in 2007.
Robert's first teaching job was in Atkins and then he went to the Linn-Mar Community School District, where he taught science for his remaining career. Bob also coached the boys' golf team and drove a bus for much of his tenure in the Linn-Mar district. Bob chaperoned many senior class rafting trips in Colorado.
Bob was an accomplished golfer and always looked forward to playing frequent tournaments with many friends. He was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and an enthusiastic Iowa Hawkeye fan his entire life. Bob enjoyed evenings of music and dancing. Those who knew Bob best saw him as a kind, gentle and caring man who valued family and friends.
Bob and Inge resided in Green Valley, Ariz., the last three years. Bob greatly enjoyed his later years in Arizona because he enjoyed the warm weather and year- around golf that it provided him, but always enjoyed his travels back to his home state of Iowa.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Leona; stepmother, Nellie; first wife, Helen; and his two children, Joseph and Gina.
Bob is survived by his wife, Inge; brother, Jon (Debbie) of Keosauqua; sister, Marsha (Bruce) of Mountain View, Hawaii; previous wife, Nancy; son, Jason (Ashley); stepgrandchildren, Andreas Curlee and Angela (Clint) Stanek; grandchildren, Payton, Reese, Gannon, Mattea and Izabella; and nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Christy.
A public visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, where a memorial service will start at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in his name to Cedar Memorial, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
