Garret Moenk, 85, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at S.S. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in Prairie Hill Cemetery, with military honors. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. The Rev. Paul Finger will officiate at the services.

Surviving are his wife, Willene; four children, Judy (Virgil) McNamara, Anamosa, Garret (Donna) Moenk, Monticello, Jan (Mike) Miller, Anamosa, and Linda (Jeff) VonBehren, Wyoming; 11 grandchildren, Christine, Matthew, Kathleen McNamara, Garret Dean (Carrie) Moenk, Abby (Michael) Messerich, Amanda and Anna Moenk, Kimberly (Luke) Baker, Christopher Miller, Joel and Lauren VonBehren; three great-grandchildren, Connor, Courtney McNamara and Owen Baker; and two sisters, Grace Zimmerman, Anamosa, and Lillian Osthus, Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Andrew.
Garret Colin Moenk was born Sept. 11, 1930, near Monticello, Iowa, the son of Menno and Anna Caspers Moenk. Garret attended rural schools near his home. He worked as a farm hand before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Garret Moenk and Willene Walderbach were married Oct. 31, 1953, at St. James Lutheran Church, Quincy, Ill. Garret farmed in Jones and Linn counties.
He started selling real estate for the Monticello State Bank before starting his own firm, Moenk Real Estate in 1976. He also was an auctioneer for several years. Garret was still operating the combine in the fall of 2014.
Garret was a lifelong member of S.S. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church. He had served in every church office several times. He also was a member of the VFW and the Beef Prognosticators.
