John Robert Green, 90, of Cascade, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at Monticello Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Friends and relatives of John may call after noon Friday, July 31, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade. Services for John will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 31, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Cascade.
John was born Sept. 5, 1924, on the family farm near Garryowen, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna (Leytem) Green. He received his education in the country schools near Garryowen. On May 22, 1954, he was united in marriage to Helen Welter at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade. Together they had five children. She preceded him in death in April 1966.
He was united in marriage to Marcella O'Connor on Feb. 25, 1980, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. John farmed for 50 years (1955 to 2005), first near Worthington, then near Sand Springs and finally in the Scotch Grove area. He was a member of St. Matthias's Parish in Cascade.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella Green of Cascade; his children, Jim (Doris) Green of Riceville, Elizabeth (Bruce) Lorch of Ocheyedan, Pat (Cliff) Carey of Decorah, Mary (Jeff) Gray of Great Falls, Mont., and Jane (Cliff) Tiedt of Cheney, Wash.; 18 grandchildren, Ann (Derek) Cruikshank, Maria Green, Kate Green, Kallie Green, John Green, Matthew Green, Aaron Lorch, Emily Lorch, Philip Lorch, Hannah Lorch, Russell Lorch, Robert Carey, Joseph Carey, Allison (Chris) Cory, Caitlyn (Tamer) Gray Avci, Carolyn Gray, Logan Tiedt and Tyler Tiedt; one brother, Charlie (Mary) Green; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Offerman, Margaret Artz, Veronica Welter, Roman (Rosemary) Welter, Bonnie Sonksen and Charlie Gesing.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Roland "Ted" (Mildred) Green, Virginia (Vincent) Kremer, Loras Green, Mary Estelle (Frank) Simon, Joseph Green, Arnold (Lois) Green, Claude (Shirley) Green, Oscar (Bernice) Green and Mary Jo Offerman; and brothers and sister-in-law, Gene Artz, Herman Welter Jr. and Bill (Monica) Welter.
The family would like to thank the staff at Above and Beyond Hospice of Monticello, Monticello Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and Jones County Regional Care Center for all the wonderful care given to John.
