Herdliska, Shirley K.
Shirley K. Herdliska, 54, of 4219 Anderson Ave. SE, Iowa City, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at home with her family. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral Service, Iowa City, with a rosary beginning at 2:45 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society and Iowa City Hospice.
Shirley was born Feb. 21, 1956, in Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of August and Phyllis (Peiffer) Salm.
Shirley married Douglas Herdliska on May 3, 1975, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City. The couple moved to Wyoming in 1978, returning to the Iowa City area in 1990. Shirley worked for 17 years at ACT in Iowa City, as a distribution clerk, retiring in 2008, due only to her battle with cancer.
She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxillary No. 695. Shirley enjoyed traveling, camping, spending time with friends and helping out with whatever was needed at the Eagle's Aerie. She gave of her time for fundraisers and community events. She successfully made a hobby out of keeping Doug in line. Above all, her passion was that of a wife, mother and grandmother.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Doug; her children, Jeremiah Herdliska (Sara) of Iowa City, Stacey Herdliska (Mike Koenighain) of Oxford, Tiffany Pantel (Matt) of Hills; four grandchildren, Jacob, Makayla, Allison and Addison; her parents, August and Phyllis Salm of Iowa City; and brothers and sisters, Diana Werts (Tary) of Cheyenne, Wyo., Tom Salm (Jan) of North Liberty, Jean Cooney (Bill) of Denver, Colo., Randy Salm (Denise) of Iowa City, Terry Salm (Ellen) of Vero Beach, Fla., and Jeff Salm of Iowa City.
Shirley was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Tammy Salm; and her father-in-law, Gene Herdliska.
