"FRED" EGGERT
Guttenberg
Charles "Fred" Eggert, 83, of Guttenberg, passed away June 1, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.
He was born Oct. 22, 1932, in Davenport, Iowa, to Charles F. and Jeanette Eggert. Fred graduated from Davenport (Central) High School in 1950. He taught electronics in the Army Security Agency during the Korean conflict. He married Carol Ann Allison on June 10, 1955, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kansas City.
Fred and Carol moved to Cedar Rapids upon his graduation from the University of Iowa with a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1959. Fred worked at Collins Radio Co. (Rockwell Collins) for 36 years. He was manager of General Aviation Technical Publications when he retired in 1995. Fred and Carol moved to Guttenberg after retiring.
Fred was a private pilot and enjoyed his time in the air for many years. He was active in many professional and community organizations. Fred enjoyed remodeling their home on the Mississippi, working in the yard, working with his computer and reading. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends both in Guttenberg and in Port Aransas, Texas, during the winters. Fred loved to travel and he and Carol visited all 50 states, all of the Canadian provinces, and more than 30 countries. Cruising on the Mississippi as captain (and crew) of rental houseboats and later his own pontoon boat, also was a favorite pastime.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Steven (Lu) Eggert of Iowa City and Cathy (Bill) Weare of New Hampshire; six grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; a son-in-law, Kentlin Keebler of Centennial, Wyo.; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Karen; and sister, Edie Gertz.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, 207 S. First St., Guttenberg. Private family services will be at a later date.
