Chester B. Eales, 92, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Clarence Senior Living. Funeral services: 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at Spirit of Faith Family Church, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Burial with military honors: Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolynne (David) Gaddie of Pine Bluff, Ark., and their children, Rochelle (the Rev. David) Dalton and Allison (Bill) Tindall; a son, Marvin (Joia) Eales of Mount Vernon, and their children, Nathan Eales and Brandon (Nicole) Eales; five great-grandchildren, Xander and Chandler Dalton, Lilly Tindall and Greyson and Micah Eales; and many nieces and nephews.
Chester was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Lamar, Mo., the son of Harry and Ina (Rudisaile) Eales. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1941, and a few years later, he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific during World War II. After returning home, he married Ferne Farrington in Marion, Iowa, on Jan. 1, 1947. She died in 2006.
Chester and Ferne farmed in Cedar County their entire lives. Chester was passionate about farming and had a special knack for welding. He enjoyed square dancing, traveling and rarely lost a game of Carroms. Chester never knew a stranger and loved to visit. He especially liked to tell stories from his time in the service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ferne; and four sisters, Helen Cummins, Esther Brown, Anna Brown and Lona Scott.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Spirit of Faith Family Church, designated for Ike Akabogu Ministries, which is a church plant of Spirit of Faith Family Church in Abuja, Nigeria.
