William E. "Bill" McEvoy, 77, of Ryan, passed away at home Oct. 22, 2014, of myelodysplastic syndrome, surrounded by his wife and children. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ryan. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the church, where there will be a 2 p.m. Scripture service. Additional visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday before the services. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.
Bill was born March 7, 1937, in Ryan, and was united in marriage on Oct. 1, 1960, to Doris Till at St. John's Church, Placid, Iowa.
A lifelong farmer, Bill was proud of his farm's designation as a Century Farm in 1990.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dancing with his wife, socializing, and spoiling his grandchildren. Thanksgiving was a favorite holiday when the entire family gathered each year for an extended celebration.
Bill served on numerous community boards, including Lions Club, St. Patrick's Church of Ryan, Ryan Co-op and Prairieburg Fire Department and was a member of the American Legion.
He served six years in the U.S. National Guard and was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris; three sons and five daughters, Diane Kleinman of West Orange, N.J., Doreen "Maggie" McEvoy, M.D., of Minneapolis, Joe (Maureen) McEvoy of Central City, Kris McEvoy (Jamie Cross) of West Des Moines, Mike (Tammy) McEvoy of Walker, Trish (Aaron) Cook of Winthrop, Amy McEvoy of Chicago and Sean McEvoy, M.D., of London/Seattle; and 13 grandchildren, Shira and Avi Kleinman, Brian, Jessica and Andrew McEvoy, Liv, Sam and Charlie Cross, Chelsea and Allison McEvoy, Holly, Spencer and Kirby Cook.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Marie (Elledge); and infant twin brothers, Clarence and Clare.
A memorial fund has been established in lieu of flowers.
The family thanks The Ghosh Center, UnityPoint St. Luke's Infusion Center staff, the Mississippi Valley Blood Bank and UnityPoint St. Luke's Palliative Care and Hospice.
