JOAN KNOX SELF
Cedar Rapids
Joan Knox Self passed away peacefully at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House, Collierville, Tenn., on Sept. 13, 2015.
Born Sept. 22, 1931, to Dwight Knox and Virginia
(Loper) Knox in New London, Conn., she moved to Los Angeles at age 10. Graduating from UCLA, she lived in many states as the wife of Marine Corps officer William R. Self and abroad in London.
Bill and Joan finished raising their family in Cedar Rapids, where they were very active in Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church. Joan coordinated the local Christmas International House (an organization to host international college students with local families over the holidays) for many years.
She and Bill moved back to California when Bill became ill. Joan had been a teacher, but had gone back to school at the University of Iowa and received a master's in social work. She moved back to Iowa in 2001 to be close to her daughter and two granddaughters, and lived in North Liberty, and then Melrose Meadows in Iowa City. She moved again to Memphis, Tenn., in 2012 to follow her daughter, Dr. Anne Sullivan.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne (Self) Sullivan of Memphis; her son, David Self of Dallas; along with son-in-law, Michael Sullivan; daughter-in-law, Erika Navarro; two granddaughters, Allison (Memphis, Tenn.) and Shannon Sullivan (Coralville); and two younger sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Cathedral Memorial Gardens, Garden Grove, Calif.
The family requests any memorial donations to be made to the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House.
