Janet Kay Lanik, 74, died peacefully at home Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, surrounded by her family after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. A graveside committal service and visitation will be held later this spring at Lensing Oak Hill in Coralville, with the time and date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244.
Janet was born Dec. 31, 1942, in Creston, the daughter of Frederick "Fritz" and Ruth Coffman Franklin. The family later moved four miles west to Cromwell, where Janet grew up. She graduated from Cromwell High School in 1961, where she was active in sports and music. She also was a member of 4-H, raising and successfully showing her Hereford calves. Jan attended the University of Iowa, where she was a drummer in the Scottish Highlanders.
She married Robert Uhler in 1964, and they had two children, Michael and Kristen. Together they owned and operated the Mall Mobil Service Station in Iowa City. She was employed as the office manager at McGurk-Meyers Motors for many years, and in 1987, began working for the University of Iowa doing accounting for the food service at the Iowa Memorial Union. She retired in 2002.
Janet married Bruce Lanik on May 10, 1986, in Coralville. She was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs, and enjoyed watching the Cubs win the World Series. Jan was an avid duplicate bridge player. She played two or three times a week. She earned the Life Master designation from the American Contract Bridge League.
Janet is survived by her husband, Bruce; and children, Kristen Uhler and her fiance, Paul Smith of Pleasant Shade, Tenn., and Michael (Brandy) Uhler of Iowa City; her six grandchildren, Breanna, Jayden, Kaylee, Jaylyn, Darian and Kenadee; her siblings, Joyce (Craig) Jones of Mitchell, S.D., Jone (Bill) Snyder and Fred (Joyce) Franklin, both of Creston; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved grandparents, Floyd and Nellie Franklin.
