Neil Barkalow, 46, of Mount Vernon, passed away after a long struggle with mental illness and depression on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, at home. Neil Derrick Barkalow was born May 28, 1974, in Iowa City. He grew up in North Liberty with his mom, Carol Lee (Ambrose) Barkalow, and seven siblings. Neil worked in restaurants, did landscaping, but most recently was a stay-at-home dad. Neil cherished his kids. He lived for tucking them in each night, picking them up from school, creating a shared love for music in singing songs, seeing the excitement in Jack's Minecraft interest and Caroline's smile in seeing her dad, and Ellie's band talents and eclectic music tastes. Neil wished for his children to chase their dreams and find happiness in their lives. His love for them will not be forgotten. He will be missed by his family and friends.
" ... Some day when we meet up yonder, we'll stroll hand in hand again."
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Memorials will be directed to an organization that helps those battling mental illness.
