HOPKINTON – Investigators say a 3-year-old girl died after being attacked by two dogs in the backyard of a home in Hopkinton.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of the girl being attacked by dogs in the 200 block of Third Street in Hopkinton.
Investigators say the girl was able to get into the backyard where, according to Deputy Travis Hemesath, two Rottweiler's attacked her.
Hemesath said the Rottweiler's belonged to the girl's grandparents, who were not home at the time of the attack.
“There was an 18-year-old male subject that was babysitting at the time. It's unknown on the relationship between the two,” Hemesath said.
Investigators say paramedics took the girl to an Anamosa hospital where she was pronounced dead.
No charges were filed as of Saturday night. The sheriff's office said the dogs' owners requested that the dogs be euthanized.
“That's upon the owner's request, the owner wanted that so that's why that was done,” Hemesath said.
Investigators have not released the name of the girl pending notification of relatives.
