John Douglas "Doug" Mercil passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, at the age of 79 after a courageous fight with cancer. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Parish vigil service: 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a Fourth Degree Chalice presentation following. Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Marion. Cremation and burial will follow at a later date.
Doug was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Minneapolis to Alexander J. and Marie A. (LaBonne) Mercil.
Doug is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Bernadette "Bernie" Leon (Erickson) Mercil. They were united in marriage at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Minneapolis. They shared a love that endured and a devotion that grew stronger with time. He also is survived by his beloved children: daughters, Lori (Mark) Slesar and Theresa Mohwinkle (Scott Kovarik); son, John (Angee) Mercil; and daughter-in-law, Diane (Jack) Cirkl; grandchildren, Mike (Amber), Maggie and James (Stephanie) Mercil, Dana (Ray) Bolinger and Sara Regan, Gina and Amy Slesar, Marty Mohwinkle and Melissa (Christian) Smith and Steven and Lauren Mercil; and dear great-grandchildren, Hannah, Madison, Katelyn, James, Jaidyn, Kendyl, Zonona, Harlow and Aliana.
He was preceded in death by his son, James Louis; and son-in-law, Mark Mohwinkle.
Doug retired from Weyerhaeuser after working many years as a foreman supervisor. He was an Air Force veteran, honorary life member and past Grand Knight of the Marion Knights of Columbus Council 5390 and a Fourth Degree member of the Rev. John R. Gallagher Assembly.
Doug and Bernie were longtime members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion, where they were active volunteers.
Family was so important to this good and gentle man.
