Iowa boys' basketball rankings: Des Moines Christian new No. 1 in Class 2A

Dec. 12, 2016 2:00 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — Three of the four No. 1s remain No. 1 in the second Gazette boys' prep basketball poll.
The exception is Des Moines Christian, which ascends to the top spot in Class 2A. The Lions had a 3-0 week to improve to 5-0 overall.
That included an impressive 79-49 blowout of Fort Dodge St. Edmond, which was ranked sixth in 1A. The Gaels dropped out of the top 10 in the class.
Western Christian went from No. 1 in 2A to fifth after a loss to Spirit Lake. Second-ranked Carroll Kuemper lost to Lewis Central and moved down to sixth.
Northeast (6-0) is second behind Des Moines Christian, with South Hamilton (4-0) and Pella Christian (3-1) third and fourth. Cascade moved into the 2A poll at seventh.
The Cougars have a new coach in Jacob Brindle and essentially a brand new team from the one that finished state runner-up last season.
Iowa City West (4A), Waverly-Shell Rock (3A) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1A) remain solid No. 1s atop their classes, though West trailed Dubuque Hempstead by a point going to the fourth quarter this past Friday night before rallying for a 61-55 win. Cedar Falls comes in second in 4A, with North Scott third, Dubuque Senior fourth and Sioux City East fifth.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy (3-0) joins the 4A poll at No. 6. After the Cougars are Ames, Ankeny Centennial, West Des Moines Dowling and Des Moines North.
West Delaware (4-0) jumped three spots from fifth to second in Class 3A. Atlantic is third, Cedar Rapids Xavier fourth and Pella fifth.
Xavier lost its only game last week to 4A Linn-Mar.
North Linn (4-0) checks in at No. 2 behind Gladbrook-Reinbeck in 1A. The last game for the Lynx was a 103-18 defeat of Cedar Valley Christian.
Lone Tree is fourth in 1A, Montezuma eighth.
