Hubert Joseph Gent was born Feb. 14, 1944, in Kinross, Iowa, the son of Paul and Mary (Clarahan) Gent. He graduated from English Valley High School in 1963. On May 29, 2004, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Wehr at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Hubert farmed in the Harper community for many years and worked as a custodian at the University of Iowa for 10 years. He had lived in Kalona since 2003. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Hubert enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren; his horse, Strawberry; traveling; family history; and gardening. Hubert died on Friday, June 19, 2015, at his home in Kalona at the age of 71 years, surrounded by his wife and children, after a hard-fought battle with brain lymphoma.
Hubert is survived by his wife, Jeanette of Kalona; eight children, Kathryn (Dave) Kieckhafer of Platteville, Wis., Mark (Kev) Gent of Kalona, Kevin (Kim) Gent of Simpsonville, S.C., Molly (Jeff) Sprouse of Keota, Karla (Nick) Elliott of Cedar Falls, Shaila (Nicole) Gent of Salem, Mass., Brian Peck of Clive and Renee (Jeff) Shaffer of Des Moines; 19 grandchildren, Lauren, Josh, Christopher, Skyler, Brooklyn, Anniston, Andria, Raigan, Addison, Carson, Caden, Colby, Keaton, Gavin, Payton, Griffin, Corbin, Braxton and Sydney; five brothers, Dennis (Shirley) Gent of Webster, Raymond (Donna) Gent of North English, Marvin Gent of Williamsburg, Leo (Barbara) Gent of Omaha, Neb., and Pat (Mary) Gent of Keota; and three sisters, Henrietta (Frank) O'Connell of Marion, Pauline (Frank) McDonald of Cedar Rapids and Ellen (Wayne) Morrison of Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. Burial will be in St Patrick's Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 22, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for Miracles in Motion Therapeutic Equestrian Center and Trappist Caskets for Children.
