Shirley "Shirel" E. Lamb, Cedar Rapids, passed away July 6, 2018, at age 92.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, officiated by Pastor Bonnie Koeppen. Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m Wednesday at the church. Burial with military honors will take place at Ivy Hill Cemetery near Malcom at
3 p.m. Wednesday. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Shirel was born April 8, 1926, at home near Malcom, Iowa, to William and Emma (Schultz) Lamb. He grew up on the farm and attended Malcom and Brooklyn schools, graduating from Brooklyn High School in 1943.
Shirel married Dorothy Marie Freese on Oct. 25, 1944, in Brooklyn. He entered the U.S. Naval Air Corps in 1943, attended John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, for two years where he then went on to serve on the USS TH Bliss. He spent his naval time in the European Theater until discharged in January 1946. Shirel and Dorothy lived in Brooklyn, Emmetsburg and Cedar Rapids, where they raised three children.
Shirel worked all his years in the mechanical field of plumbing, heating and air conditioning. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He followed all sports and always enjoyed good conversation. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, serving as a Sunday school teacher at one time. He coached Little League baseball and was a member of the Masonic Order for over 50 years. Shirel also served on the Electrical Board of Review in Cedar Rapids and was a member of Local 263 Sheet Metal Workers Union.
After the death of his wife Dorothy in 1991, Shirel married Joanne Gensicke Burchenbreiter on Dec. 3, 1999, in Cedar Rapids.
Shirel is survived by daughter, Barbara Hamilton, Cedar Falls; son, Lynn (Darlene) Lamb, Oro Valley, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Gail Lamb, Cedar Falls; step-daughters, Ann Teidt, Marion, Dawn Trudeau, Seattle, and Lynn (Alan) Goya, Las Vegas; and stepson, Dean (Carol) Burchenbreiter, Cedar Rapids.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; brother, Merle (Ruth) Lamb, Grinnell; sister-in-law Dorothy Freese, Cedar Rapids; and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both his first and second wife; son, Edwin Lamb; son-in-law, Larry Hamilton; three brothers, Truman, Faye and LaVern Lamb; two sisters, Bernice Pals and Maxine Smith; six brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law.
Memorials may be designated to St. Mark's Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, or to the family for designation at a later time.
