Dennis Saeugling, 98, of Iowa City, died Nov. 18, 2016, at Briarwood Health Care Center surrounded by his family.

Dennis was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Guttenberg, Iowa, to Henry and Christina Saeugling. He and his twin brother, Dean, were the youngest of 10 children.

Dennis served in the Army Air Corps and Merchant Marines during World War II. After the war, he married Arlene Fukey in Guttenberg. They moved to Minneapolis, where Dennis graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in civil engineering.

Dennis joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1948 and worked as an engineer on construction of the Garrison Dam in Riverdale, N.D., followed by a move to Iowa City, where he continued his engineering career as owner and president of Hawkeye Engineering Co. in Coralville. In addition, he served as Coralville city engineer in the 1960s and early 1970s, contributing to the city's growth and success.

His long life was guided by his Catholic faith and boundless optimism, never seeing a problem lacking a solution. He loved dogs, books, travel, helping others and, above all, he loved his family.

He will be missed and remembered always.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Arlene; their two children, Denise (Kirk) Wilcox and Mike (Marnie) Saeugling; their six grandchildren, Bobby, Kyle, Kirsten, Aaron, Lee and Annie; and two great-grandchildren, Magnus and Reuben.

Dennis was preceded in death by his nine siblings.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. Family will greet friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Crisis Center of Johnson County, Shelter House or the Johnson County Family Crisis Center.
