MacDougall triggers Prairie comeback

CEDAR RAPIDS -- He dunked. He drilled 3-pointers. And Matthew MacDougall carried Cedar Rapids Prairie to victory.
Prairie rallied from 11 points down in the final 2:16 of regulation, then controlled overtime in a 67-62 Mississippi Valley Conference boys' basketball win over Cedar Rapids Xavier Friday night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.
"Personally, I wasn't going to let us lose," MacDougall said. "It was a total team effort. We chipped away, and our defense was really good at the end."
Prairie (9-10 overall, 5-9 MVC) faced a 53-42 deficit, but met it headlong.
MacDougall's 3-pointer gave the Hawks some life at 53-48 with 1:25 left, then he grabbed a steal and slammed it home to make it 53-50 with 46 seconds left.
Another trey tied it at the 0:36 mark.
Kevin Hosch's spin move gave the Saints (7-12, 6-8) the lead with 10 seconds left, then Prairie's Jace Hanna hit a jumper just before the horn to send it to overtime.
Hanna added 14 points and five assists for the winners.
Xavier scored the first point of the extra session, then Prairie scored eight of the next 11 to assume control for good. Jacob Aune hit 4 of 6 free throws in the final half-minute to clinch the victory.
MacDougall had three dunks Friday, sending his season total to five. The second one gave Prairie a 34-33 lead, but Xavier responded with a 14-2 run for an 11-point lead.
The teams traded baskets before Prairie made its frantic run at the end of regulation.
"This was a huge win," MacDougall said. "They beat us by 20 at our place, and we wanted to make a statement that we're not going to be an easy team to beat."
Mack Mattke led Xavier with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Xavier went 2 of 9 from the line in the fourth quarter and overtime.
