Jerome Milo "Jerry" Velky, 94, of Clutier, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 1, 2021, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Dennis Conway as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Clutier. Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Masks are required to be worn and social distancing practiced inside the funeral home and the church. Jerome was born on April 13, 1926, in Pacov, Czechoslovakia, the son of Richard and Josephine (Soukup) Velky.
He graduated from Clutier High School and furthered his education while in the service. Jerry served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, entering in May of 1944 and discharged in June of 1946.
On Nov. 23, 1948, he was united in marriage to Leona Mae Pokorny at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier. Jerry farmed near Clutier and also did carpentry. He was a salesman for Funks G Hybrids Seed Corn for many years. Jerry was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier. He was a current member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, Catholic Order of Foresters, ZCBJ Lodge, American Legion for 60-plus years, and Farm Bureau. Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards (Pepper), going to dances, and loved going to his pond.
Survivors include his six children, Ken (Laurie) Velky of Toledo, Mary (Mike) DeVries of Warrensburg, Mo., Jim (Chrys) Velky of Ogden, Julie (Mike) Murray of Marion, John Velky of Davenport and Tom (Danielle) Velky of Waverly; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his wife, Leona Mae Velky, in 2003.
Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.
