EDWARD KULHAVY

Edward "Ed" G. Kulhavy, 88, of Walford, died at West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids, on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: Hala Cemetery, Walford. A vigil service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet; three children, Debbie (Gary) Hendrickson of Castro Valley, Calif., Teri (Bill) Dunham of Naper-ville, Ill., and Jeff Kulhavy (Melissa Jans) of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Erick and Evan Hendrick-son, both of San Francisco, Elisa (Eric) Blue of Pittsburgh, Tyler Dunham of Charlotte, N.C., and Jake Dunham of Naperville, Ill.; great-granddaughter, Leighton Blue; sister-in-law, Joyce Kulhavy; nephew, Randy Kulhavy; and many nieces and nephews.
Edward Gottlieb was born May 18, 1927, at his family farm in Johnson County, the son of Wesley and Emma Christen Kulhavy. He married Janet Ann Riley on Nov. 15, 1949, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Walford. Ed served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the 450th Auxiliary Division. For 35 years, Ed drove delivery trucks for Hometown Dairy, retiring in 1987.
Ed was a member of American Legion Pekomy Post 572, St. John XXIII Catholic Church, former member and board member of Holy Trinity Church, and part of the Walford Town Council. He was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Ed enjoyed being in the outdoors, which included gardening, feeding and watching wild birds, and doing yard work. He also enjoyed spending time with his favorite dog, Abbie.
A memorial fund has been established in Ed's name.
