Washington boys, Kennedy girls advance

Oct. 20, 2011 6:40 pm
CEDAR FALLS -- It was the most important race of the season. But for Robert Hogg and Etienne Nzoyisaba, it wasn't much different than a jaunt on Cottage Grove Avenue or in Noelridge Park.
"Just like practice," Hogg grinned.
Hogg and Nzoyisaba finished 1-2 to lead the Cedar Rapids Washington boys to second place at a Class 4A district cross country meet Thursday at Birdsall Park.
"Etienne and I have run a lot of workouts together," said Hogg, who pulled past his teammate in the final stretch to take the title. "With a half-mile to go, I was about to yell, 'Go, Etienne, go!' "
That was when Nzoyisaba was out front and being challenged by two Cedar Falls runners, and Hogg was running fourth. In the end, Hogg passed them all and finished in 16:10. Nzoyisaba was next in 16:11.
"I've been a track guy," Hogg said. "(My kick) has been my forte."
Cedar Falls swept the team championships, with Washington's boys and Cedar Rapids Kennedy's girls earning runner-up honors.
The top three teams and top 10 individuals from each meet advance to the state meet Oct. 29 at Lakeside Golf Course, Fort Dodge.
Cedar Falls' boys tallied 28 points, while the Hogg-Nzoyisaba daily double staked Washington to a 39-point total. Dubuque Senior edged Dubuque Hempstead, 101-105, for the final state bid.
In the girls' competition, Cedar Falls scored 30 points, compared to 39 for Kennedy. Senior held off Washington, 80-85, for the third spot.
Allison Gregg and Brianna King of Cedar Falls were the first two finishers, in 15:13 and 15:28.
Then came a Kennedy stampede. Alyssa Averhoff, Jessica Rodman and Katie Wampole were third, fifth and sixth. Lauren Meyer was 10th.
"I really got out slow," said Averhoff, who worked her way up through the string of runners throughout the race and finished in 15:42. "I was really motivated at the end. I saw the clock, and it looked like my time was slow."
Times don't matter. Places matter. State matters.
The Cougars qualified last year, and placed 15th.
"We're going to do better this year," Averhoff said. "Tenth or better."
Washington's Shannon Gorman qualified individually, placing fourth in the girls race.
