HENRY JAUHIAINEN
Cedar Rapids
The Rev. Henry H. Jauhiainen, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 3, 2015, at Northbrook Manor. His memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m.
Henry was born in Painesdale, Mich., on Sept. 23, 1924, to Nestor and Mary Jauhiainen. His family moved to nearby Hancock in 1925. He graduated in 1942 from Hancock High School, where he participated in basketball and track. During World War II he served in automotive ordnance supply in the Army Air Corps.
He studied at Suomi College (now Finlandia University) and Suomi Theological Seminary, 1946-1950, and earned a B.A. in history at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1952. At Suomi, he received the Sampo Award; at UMD, the DeGroat Memorial Award. While at UMD, he also received a national citation from the Freedoms Foundation. He later did D. Min. studies at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Ill.
Henry married Maxine Tuttle in Friend, Neb., in November 1951.
He is survived by four sons, Marc of McHenry, Ill., Dr. Eric (Susan) of Walla Walla, Wash., Brian (Alexandra) of Cedar Rapids and Dr. Peter (Jan) of Cedar Rapids; and six grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Simeon, Micah, Henry and Benjamin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Arne and Robert.
Jauhiainen was a student-pastor of his home church, Laurium Gospel Tabernacle, Laurium, Mich., 1947-1950. He was ordained to the ministry at Duluth Gospel Tabernacle in 1952, serving until 1956 as assistant pastor. He served Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle eight years, returning to the Duluth congregation as senior pastor in 1964. He spent a month with the church's missionaries in the interior of Liberia, West Africa, in 1968. His Duluth area ministry was marked by interdenominational efforts, initiating annual Easter inter-church events at the DECC and advising the neo-charismatic movement locally.
In 1975, the Jauhiainen family moved to Crystal Lake, Ill., where Henry served as founding pastor of Crystal Valley Church, a home mission effort, until 1991.
He was actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Assemblies as a conference speaker, visiting Bible college teacher, youth camp director and writer-editor. He directed a five-year process known as "The Future of the Fellowship" and served two decades as chairman of the FCA Heritage Committee. He published several articles on worship theology and practice and was the FCA's foremost historian.
Upon retiring from regular pastoral work in 1991, Jauhiainen served in interim ministry, special foreign projects and began writing a definitive history of the FCA, which he never completed. His personal papers and substantial archival work are deposited at the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center in Springfield, Mo.
Henry and Maxine moved back to Duluth in 1995, enjoying life with home church members and community friends. Finlandia University honored him for distinguished service in 1998. In 2013, they moved to Cedar Rapids to be near children and grand-children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to members of the family.
