Blairstown
Dean R. Nieland, 87, of Blairstown, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a sudden illness. Private family funeral services will be held. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown, at a later date. Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown is in charge of arrangements.
Dean was born July 20, 1926, the son of Lawrence Verna (Athey) Nieland, in Blairstown. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Lewis on June 25, 1949, at Blairstown Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie of Blairstown; his sons, Robert (Sheryl) Nieland of Shellsburg and Michel (Patricia) Nieland of Belle Plaine; his daughter, Carol (Kelly) Nugent of Amana; his grandchildren, Amber Tilley, Andrea Highberger, Rhiannon Nugent, Dylan Nugent, Mark Nieland and Tony Nieland; his great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Makenzie Nieland, Ethan and Carli Highberger and Archer Nieland.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Wendy Jo Schulze; sister, Marjorie Radeke; and brother, Leo Nieland.
