LOUIS WILLIAM GREIF
Cedar Rapids
Louis William Greif, 72, of Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, after suffering an injury due to a fall in Brownsville, Texas, on his way home from vacation.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, Nov. 25, at Prairie Hill Pavilion, 5680 Kacena Ave., Marion. Family will be present from 5 to 10 p.m., and dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Louis "Louie" Greif was born June 6, 1944, in Worthington, Iowa. At the age of 17, he enlisted and served in the Navy for three years. He then met Marcene Brown in 1966, and they married on Sept. 16, 1967. Louie drove a delivery truck for Wilson Foods for many years. After a life-altering accident that left him a paraplegic, he enrolled in classes at Mount Mercy and graduated with a degree in accounting. He then partnered with his son, Doug, to own and operate manufactured housing communities. Louie thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and spending time with family and friends.
After retirement, Louie and Marcy wintered in Laguna Vista, Texas, for eight years. This October, they moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., full time to enjoy the warm weather and spend time together.
Survivors include his wife, Marcy Greif; children, Douglas (Lisa) Greif of Mount Vernon and Dennis (Michelle) Greif of Corpus Christi, Texas; brothers, Arnie (Betty) Greif and Earl (Velda) Greif; sisters, Teresa Stevens and Jeanette Freese; and three granddaughters, Kelsey of Iowa City, Kaitlin of Des Moines and Jordan of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by five older brothers, Robert, Joe, John, Loras and Fay; a nephew, Patrick Freese; a great-niece, Marcy McNamara; a great-nephew, Aaron Greif; three brothers-in-law, Duane Freese, Richard Stevens and Bob Selvig; and a sister-in-law, Alvina Greif.
At the end of his life, Louie was able to donate his corneas.
In lieu of flowers, it is asked that donations be made to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation in his name to support and advance spinal cord injury research.
