CEDAR RAPIDS - With three team state championships, three individuals state champs and four Coach of the Year honors, Patrick Flanagan brings a lot of talent to the Xavier boys' golf team.
Flanagan joined the Xavier staff as head freshman coach. He was a former head golf coach at Columbus High School in Waterloo.
'I have been playing since I was a caddie in junior high, and I've played the game ever since,” Flanagan said. 'The past 10 years I have been a part of Titleist Performance Institution which is a group of golf teachers that are sponsored by Titleist, to make male golfers better.”
When the English department had an open teaching position, Flanagan knew it was an opportunity he could not turn down.
'An opportunity I could not resist,” he said. 'An English job opened up and I said, I am going to inquire about that.”
The head varsity coach, Tim O'Brien and the boys' golf team are excited to add Flanagan to the team.
'He is doing a tremendous job which, does not surprise me because he was a former varsity coach with many successes at Columbus, and we are really fortunate to have him on the staff, both as a teacher and coach,” O'Brien said.
The boys' golf team is led by senior Nick Recker this season.
The Saints are competing today at the MVC Mississippi Division meet at Gardner Memorial Golf Course.
