Judith Ann Heilers, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, with Father Dustin Vu presiding. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW.
Judith was born March 23, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Harold and Zella (Dettbarn) Richter. She married Edward Heilers on Jan. 29, 1966, in Earlville. Judy worked five years at United Fire and over 12 years at Von Maur, as well as a seamstress in her home.
Judy was a member of East Iowa Heirloom Quilters, Marion Mothers of Twins Club, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfax and Altar & Rosary Society, as well as a current parishioner at St. John XXIII Catholic Church. She served in various leadership roles in the organizations of which she was a member.
She enjoyed quilting, watching sporting events and spending time with her family.
Judy was nominated for the KCRG-TV9 9 Who Care Award for charitable work of distributing quilts to flood victims. Judy and Ed were Parents of the Year at Loras College in 1987.
Judy is survived by her husband, Edward; her children, Kevin Heilers of Cedar Rapids, Cherie (Robert) Dandurand of Salix, Greg Heilers of Kansas City, Mo., Gary (Tracy) Heilers of St. Charles, Ill., and Traci (Daniel) Byrnes of Waukon; six grandchildren, Richard and Eddie Dandurand, Ian, Andrew and Zack Heilers and Natalie Byrnes; two brothers, John (Lynne) Richter of Earlville and Gene (Suzy) Richter of Solon; and her sisters, Beverly Jo (John) Heilers of Bemidji, Minn., Faye L. (Wayne) Meyers of Eugene, Ore., Joann (Collin) Proctor of Wilton and Diane (Jim) Stone of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
