MARENGO - The prosecution continues its case 9 a.m. Thursday in the first-degree murder trial of Tonch Weldon who is accused of killing a 35-year-old woman who lived with him and his wife in 2009.
Weldon, 39, of Blairstown, is accused of killing Amy Gephart, who was shot once in the chest with a 20-gauge shotgun before he turned the gun on himself June 7, 2009 in his home.
In Wednesday testimony, Weldon's wife Amanda testified she and Tonch had a consensual sexual relationship with Gephart but she and Gephart fell in love and wanted to leave Tonch. She said Tonch shot Gephart in front of her and then shot himself.
The defense plans to argue Tonch was intoxicated that day, under stress, sleep deprived and the shooting wasn't premeditated, according to his attorney Edward Leff's opening statement. He said Tonch just "snapped" that day.
The trial is expected to last about two weeks.
Reporter Trish Mehaffey will continue her live blog from the courtroom. Readers/viewers can follow along and ask questions or provide comments.
