Phillip L. Mathews, 78, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila Mathews; children, Michael (Jill) Mathews and Kayla (Mike) Wooff; a brother, Ronald (Teresa) Mathews; his sister, Kathy (Mike) McClurg; granddaughters, Maegan (Richard) Boots and Kelsey (Brandon Halstead) Mathews; stepgranddaughter, Olivia (Zach) Witte; great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Mathews, Dakota Mathews, Devin Mathews, Dylan Mathews and Wyatt Mathews; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Willcoxson and Linda Reese; and a brother, Stanley Duane Mathews.
Phillip was born Sept. 8, 1942, the son of Forrest and Helen (Dixon) Mathews in Bloomfield, Iowa. He graduated from Bloomfield High School with the Class of 1960. He left for the the U.S. Navy the day after graduation and served until 1963. In 1964, he moved to Cedar Rapids and went to work for Hawkeye Rubber Manufacturing Co. for 37 years. Phillip was united in marriage to Sheila Kerby on July 2, 1966, at the Bloomfield Christian Church. He enjoyed working in his yard, camping and time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed having coffee with his friends from Hawkeye on Monday mornings at Hy-Vee.
