Former Iowa State men's basketball player Bryce Dejean-Jones, 23, was shot and killed in Dallas early Saturday morning, according to Dallas police.
The Ames Tribune first reported his death.
Dallas police said officers responded to a 3:20 a.m. call at an apartment, where the resident told them that an intruder kicked open his front door while he was asleep in his bedroom and failed to respond when the resident called out.
The man then grabbed a handgun and opened fire when the intruder kicked his bedroom door, the police statement said.
The intruder left the apartment and collapsed in the breezeway, later dying at a hospital. The police statement identified the dead man as Dejean-Jones.
An NBA report obtained by ESPN indicates Dejean-Jones was attempting to enter his girlfriend's apartment, but went to the wrong unit.

Dejean-Jones played one season at Iowa State (2014-15) after previous stops at USC (2010-11) and UNLV (2012-14). He averaged 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds as the Cyclones went 25-9.
He had just completed his rookie NBA season with the New Orleans Pelicans, appearing in 14 games.
'We are deeply saddened to learn the tragic news about Bryce,' former ISU head coach Fred Hoiberg said in a statement. 'I'm grateful that our paths crossed in this life. Bryce was a passionate and talented player that lived out his dream of playing in the NBA through hard work and perseverance. It's an incredibly sad day for me and all of Iowa State University. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce's family.'
Some former ISU teammates of Dejean-Jones tweeted their thoughts Saturday.
