A Minnesota man accused of sexual exploitation of a minor in January 2010 turned himself in to the Johnson County Sheriff's office at around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Reports indicate that Iowa City police received a complaint that Michael J. Lindberg, 20, of Roseville, Minn., a former resident of Dolphin Point Enclave apartments, was believed to have child pornography on his laptop computer in January 2010.
An investigation into the matter was then conducted by the Iowa City Police Department, Iowa City Police Sgt. Denise Brotherton said.
During the investigation, detectives conducted interviews and Lindberg's laptop was analyzed. Several thousand photographs of nude and clothed juvenile females ranging from 10 to 16 years old were allegedly discovered.
Two photos had juvenile females engaging in a sexual act, Iowa City police said.
A warrant for Lindberg's arrest was issued on September 13, and a request for extradition was filed on September 24, 2010. Lindberg was arrested on that warrant May 5 in Washington County, MN.
At that time, Lindberg elected not to waive the extradition that would allow authorities to return him to Iowa. Lindberg appeared in front of a judge and was giving a $20,000 bond on May 6. He posted bond, was released, and chose to drive himself to Johnson County to turn himself in.
"The big benefit to not waiving [the extradition] and turning himself in is that it saves the tax payers here a lot of money," Johnson County Sheriff's Office Lt. Kevin Bell said. "That way we don't have to drive to Minnesota to get him and bring him back."Lindberg was being held at the Johnson County Jail Wednesday morning on a $7,500 cash or surety bond.
