Linnan, Shirley J.
Shirley J. Linnan, 81, of Cottage Grove Place, died Thursday, March 29, 2012. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. David O'Connor. Entombment: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
Survivors include her daughters, Margaret (David) Kegel and Jeralyn (Raymond) Marsalli, both of Hiawatha; grandchildren, Michael and Allyson Kegel and Annette Marsalli; two stepgrandchildren, Abigail (Ben) Walsh and Samuel Kegel; a stepgreat-grandchild, Ryan Kegel; sister, Zita Waschkat of Waterloo; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Michael.
Shirley was born Oct. 30, 1930, to Leo and Margaret (Kearney) Moran in Tama, Iowa. She attended Tama High School, graduating in 1948. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and completed postgraduate study at Teachers College of Columbia University, New York City. Shirley married Michael Linnan on Nov. 29, 1958, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. She taught in the Cedar Rapids Community School District and later worked as a government contract administrator for the Defense Logistics Agency, retiring in 1995.
After retirement, her endeavors included caring for her priceless grandchildren from babyhood to kindergarten, travel
and researching family genealogy.
Shirley had been an active member of All Saints Catholic Church since 1958.
Shirley was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and our source of enduring wisdom. Shirley will be remembered as a teacher, both in the classroom and for her family. We will forever cherish her unselfish love and examples of perseverance.
Memorials may be directed to All Saints Catholic Church or the Anna Purna Ghosh Foundation.
The family would like to thank the Rev. David O'Connor, Linda Stavropoulos, the parishioners of All Saints Catholic Church, Dr. Mary Anne Nelson, and Dr. Chiratan Ghosh and staff, for their innovative, uplifting and exceptionally compassionate care.
