Middle Amana
Bonnie J. Hertel, 70, of Middle Amana, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Tony Berger officiating. Burial will be in Middle Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at the church.
Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Heritage Society.
Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Stan; a brother, Larry (Wilma) Rettig of South Amana; and a sister, Rosemary (David) Houser of Moatsville, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Bonnie Jean Rettig was born June 1, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Lina Leonhardt Rettig. She received her education in the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School. Bonnie and Stan Hertel were married June 18, 1966, at the Amana Church.
Bonnie continued her education at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and then went on to the University of Minnesota, receiving her bachelor's degree in home economics. She worked for the Department of Human Services in Louisville and Frankfort, Ky. The couple returned to Amana 15 years ago following their retirements.
Bonnie was an outstanding seamstress and a wonderful cook. She especially loved to shop. She was fond of animals, especially cats.
