Daniel John Smith of Norwalk, formerly of Marion, passed away at his home Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, while surrounded by his family.
Dan is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Aaron (Bethanie), Tucson, Ariz., Michael (Stephanie) and Joseph (Jessica), Norwalk; grandsons, Bennett Porter, Liam Daniel and Harrison Daniel, Norwalk; siblings, Selma Alzheimer, Marion, and Pamela (Douglas) Fuller, Anamosa; and many nieces and nephews.
Dan will be remembered for his love of auctions and tag sales. He was an avid collector of antiques, artwork, stamps, coins and baseball cards. His sons and grandsons were his pride and joy. He taught them, at an early age, the fun and learning involved in collecting. They traveled the state, setting up at baseball card trade shows so they could earn money to add to their collections. In later years, the buying and selling conversations were in regard to investments and the stock market.
Dan loved planting trees and landscaping. His yard was full of rock gardens with hosta and beautiful perennials. He loved music, poetry and animals, especially dogs.
At Dan's request, there will be no services. Immediate family will gather at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel for interment with military funeral honors.
