CARLTON "CORKY" HALL
Cedar Rapids
Carlton "Corky" Hall, 82, of Apple Valley, Minn., died April 3, 2015, at the Veterans Home in Minneapolis.
Corky was born in Roanoke, Va., and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps immediately after graduating from high
school. After his discharge, he worked in varying jobs in the Washington, D.C., area, where he met his first wife, Pauline Reynolds, of Palo. Corky and Pauline moved to Iowa City, where Corky received his accounting degree from the University of Iowa in 1958. He worked for Peat, Marwick and Mitchell, Life Investors and National Data Processing before founding StaFed Computer Tax in 1968. StaFed acquired other companies and was renamed Top Line Services or TLS StaFed to reflect a more diverse business service line. In 1978, Corky sold his interest in TLS StaFed and then worked for Norand and did some consulting work.
In 1980, Corky married Beverly Sackman of Minneapolis, where they resided until purchasing the Golden Rule Resort in Hayward, Wis. Cork and Bev ultimately sold the resort and retired back to Apple Valley, Minn., where he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and The Salvation Army. While with The Salvation Army, he traveled to Grand Forks, N.D., in 1997 and later to New York City right after Sept. 11 and ran a food cart to the flood workers and the workers at Ground Zero.
Corky was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ed Hall of Miami, Okla.; a sister, Marie Wimmer of Springboro, Ohio; a son, Jay Hall of Houston, Texas; and a stepson, James Sackman of Minneapolis.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Beverly Hall of Apple Valley, Minn.; brother, Ricky Hall (Louise) of Hardy, Va.; and stepchildren, Cathy Westereng (Don) of Apple Valley, Minn., Carolyn Peterson (Harry) of Salisbury, N.C., Mike Sackman (Sally) of Burnsville, Minn., Jenny Brown (Tim) of Marion, Missy Savisik (Charlie) of Apple Valley, Minn. Also, sons, Joe Hall (Julie) of Madison Lake, Minn., Jeff (Danielle) of Palo and James (Beth) of Cedar Rapids; and daughters, Jeanne Matthews (Paul) of Marion and Jennie Klarenbeek (David) of Hilversum, Netherlands. In addition, he has 26 grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren.
Corky donated his body to the University of Minnesota School of Medicine so a memorial service will be held for family at the Veterans Home in Minneapolis.
The family would like to thank the VA Home and Hospital in Minneapolis for its loving care over the past year.
Memorials may be made in Corky's name to the VA or The Salvation Army.
