Jeffrey "Bubba" Nelson, 58, of Lisbon, died at home on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018. Family and friends will gather from
4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. A celebration of life will be 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Atkins Legion Hall.
Survivors include his wife, Deb of Lisbon; children, Zach O'Connor of St. Petersburg, Fla., Kyle O'Connor (Megan Moothart) of Lisbon and Broc Nelson of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Mason O'Connor; brother, Gary Nelson of Springville; in-laws, Carl and Beryl O'Connor; sister-in-law, LuAnn Yarbrough of Lisbon; brothers-in-law, Mike (Julie) O'Connor of Morley and Doug (Sally Dolan) O'Connor of Lisbon; uncle, Dean Hatfield of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
Bub was born Sept. 26, 1959, on a farm near Atkins, to Gordon and Sandra (Hatfield) Nelson. He graduated from Benton Community High School in 1978. He worked for Fleck Sales from 1978 to 1989, the city of Atkins from 1990 to 2000, and was co-owner of Bubba & Pat's Bar & Grill in Atkins for six years. He currently was working with the city of Cedar Rapids Water Department.
Bub was a volunteer member of the Atkins Fire Department for 20 years, helped coach Little League and Pony League baseball in Atkins and was a proud member of the 38 Fire Club of Atkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; brother, Jim Nelson; and son, Adam O'Connor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
