The Gannett Co., owner of the Iowa City Press-Citizen and the Des Moines Register as well as USA Today, cut approximately two percent of its workforce nationwide - some 350 or more positions - on Tuesday.
Gannett, America's largest newspaper group with about 100 properties, said the majority of those affected would be notified by the end of the day Tuesday.
The job cuts were made 'to help manage costs in a difficult environment for print and digital advertising,” a USA Today news story said.
McLean, Va.-based Gannett's acquisition of Tronc, the company that owns nine newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and the L.A. Times, could be announced this week.
The company will report third-quarter earnings Thursday.
