Lamphier, Pauline D.
Pauline D. Lamphier, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died surrounded by her family Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, in her daughter's home following a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Mark's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carroll Brown. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and Saturday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Survivors include her son, Ian (Kay) Lamphier of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Dee (Steve) Walters of West Des Moines and Sheila (Mike) Pulkrab of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jeanne (Robert) Gilby of Ontario, Canada, and Sheila (Ray) Parsons of Kent, England.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; a son, Martin; a granddaughter, Jessica; and a brother, Michael.
Pauline was born Jan. 29, 1924, in West Hyde, England, the daughter of Montague and Mary Wallace Sternberg. After graduating from school she was employed as part of the war effort in an aircraft factory in England. She married Vernon Lamphier on Sept. 25, 1943, in Rickmansworth, Harts, England. He died in 1995. She moved with her husband to Strawberry Point in 1945 and then to Cedar Rapids in 1970. She retired in 1992 as a custodial supervisor from College Community school system, where she had worked for 18 years.
She was a very active member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and was a past steward for Teamsters union 238. Pauline volunteered for many years for St. Luke's Hospital knitting baby caps.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren and growing flowers and gardening.
