Jefferson names Horman head boys' basketball coach

Apr. 21, 2014 2:31 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - Brandon Horman was promoted to co-coach of the Cedar Rapids Jefferson boys' basketball program this past season because longtime J-Hawks head coach Stu Ordman considered him a rising star.
That rising star now will run the program by himself.
Horman has been named Ordman's successor as head boys' basketball coach at Jeff, pending school board approval. The 28-year-old former Calamus-Wheatland prep met with his players Monday afternoon.
'I'm definitely awfully excited for the opportunity,' Horman said. 'Jefferson has been a great place to be at for the last six years.'
Horman's first coaching opportunity after graduating from Mount Mercy University was at Jefferson. He is a Learning Facilitator at Wilson Middle School.
Ordman announced his coaching resignation at Jefferson last month in order to take the head coaching position at Iowa City Regina. He will remain a teacher at Jeff.
'I was not expecting things to go this quickly,' Horman said. 'Jefferson has a pretty good tradition. If I counted correctly, we've had a winning record in 21 of the past 25 seasons. There aren't many programs that can say that. I want to build upon that tradition.'
Jefferson finished 7-15 in 2013-14 and loses leading scorer Jacob Olson to graduation. Tyler Konigsmark (12.3 points per game) and Lucas Larson (6.7) will return as the second and third-leading scorers.
