Marjorie Jeanne Wharff-White, 68, passed away Jan. 6, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Marj was born July 12, 1946, to Noel and Florance (Willoughby) Wharff. She graduated from North High
School in Des Moines.
Marj is survived by her husband, D. Bart White; her brother, Lewis (Susan) Wharff of Urbandale; an aunt, Harriet Olson of Des Moines; her sister-in-law, Kay Lindstrom of Portland, Ore.; her brother-in law, Bill (Carol) White of Sonoma, Calif.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and her dogs, Boscoe and Largie.
After graduation from Drake University, Marj taught at Valley High School for 34 years. She started the volleyball program and served as head coach for the first 21 years. Marj was inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaching Association Hall of Fame in 2007. She retired from teaching in 2002, but returned to her beloved Valley as assistant activities director for an additional 11 years.
Marj was a lifelong supporter of the Drake Bulldogs and the No. 1 fan of all Valley activities. She was very active in fundraising for the West Des Moines Student Scholarship Fund.
Mass of Christian Burial for Marj will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Resthaven Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at the church, followed by a Scripture service at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the West Des Moines Scholarship Fund in memory of Marjorie Wharff-White, oundation, c/o Cindy Todd, 4928 Cherrywood Pl., West Des Moines, IA 50265.
The family would like to thank all of the medical personnel who helped during Marj's final illness and thanks to the many friends who have provided support throughout this difficult time.
