Vanorny, Daniel J.
Daniel J. Vanorny, 53, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, March 14, 2011, in Iowa City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, with the Rev. Tom Carver presiding. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Solon, followed by a luncheon served at the United Methodist Church in Shueyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Visitation also will be an hour before services Saturday.
Dan was born Aug. 1, 1957, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Elmer and Iona (Benesh) Vanorny. He grew up on the family farm in Solon and graduated in 1975 from Solon High School and attended Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. He married Angela Forell in June 1982, and they later divorced in 1990 after having two children together. Dan had been working as a mechanic at the Duane Arnold Energy Center since 1986, which provided him with the means to do what he really enjoyed - farming.
Dan was an exceptionally proud father, and he was very active in his children's activities at Jefferson High School. He was also a devout fan of the Solon Spartans and frequently attended the school's sporting events. Dan was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. Dan also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.
Dan is survived by his son, Dallas Vanorny (and his fiancee, Lindsey) of Winnetka, Ill.; his daughter, Ashley Vanorny of Cedar Rapids; his parents, Elmer and Iowa Vanorny of Solon; his sister, LaVina Vanorny-Barcus (Dave) of Madrid, Iowa; and two nieces, Shaylena and Heather Barcus, both of Madrid, Iowa.
The Vanorny family would like to express their utmost gratitude to all of the people who have graciously lent their support to Dan over the last year.
