Joe DiMaggio, Bob Dylan ... and a guy named Zimmerman
Mike Hlas May. 10, 2009 11:13 pm
Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals has a 28-game hitting streak.
That's really good. It's also only halfway to the record 56-game streak Joe DiMaggio established 68 years ago.
The late John Lennon certainly wouldn't have thought Zimmerman could break the great DiMaggio's record, as is proven by this portion of his song "God."
I don't believe in yoga,
I don't believe in kings,
I don't believe in Elvis,
I don't believe in Zimmerman,
I don't believe in Beatles,
I just believe in me,
Yoko and me,
And that's reality.
But Lennon was no baseball fan, though "Instant Karma" could have applied to Manny Ramirez last week.
Lennon wasn't referring to a major-leaguer who had yet to be born when he wrote the song, of course, but to Bob Dylan, whose original name was Robert Zimmerman.
Dylan, by the way, has the No. 1 album in the latest Billboard charts, "Together Through Life."
Dylan was born in 1941. That's the year of DiMaggio's record streak.
Cue up the scary music. And no, I don't mean Dylan's. I've been a fan of his since, well, since John Lennon wrote "God."
Here's a non-video video of Dylan singing a song made popular by Olivia Newton-John:
