George Bernard Chaloupka, 86, of Solon, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Mercy Hospital Hospice. Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St., with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by the

Solon American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

George was born April 30, 1928, in rural Solon, the son of Joseph and Barbara K. (Rief) Chaloupka. He served in the United States Army following his education. He was united in marriage to Gladys E. Vanorny on April 6, 1954, in Iowa City. George was employed for over 34 years at Solon Community School District, retiring in 1992.

Following his retirement, he stayed busy with mowing at Saddleback Golf Course, volunteering at the Solon Fire Department for over 40 years and serving in the American Legion Color Guard for over 60 years. He enjoyed camping, listening to polka music, especially Barefoot Becky, attending Polka Fests and going to the Ronnenburg Restaurant in Amana for a family style meal. He also enjoyed coffee every morning with his friends at the American Legion.

George is survived by his children, Glenda Burgy and special friend Bob of Saratoga, Calif., and Gerald (Kim) Chaloupka of Solon; grandchildren, Kyle Burgy, Kirstie Burgy, Brooke (Dalton) Meyer, Jerad Chaloupka

and Logan Chaloupka;

his great-grandchildren, Ava, Gabriel and Silvi Meyer; his brother-in-law, Elmer (Iona) Vanorny of Solon; and a niece, LaVina (Dave) Vanorny-Barcus of Madrid, Iowa.

George was accepted to travel to Washington, D.C., with the Honor Flight this September along with brother-in-law Elmer Vanorny and cousin Bud Lingel.

George is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys, who died March 21, 2013; and a nephew, Daniel Vanorny.

We hold on to the memories and will always cherish the times that we had with our Dad and Grandpa, especially the bond he had created and experienced with his three great-grandchildren. We will continue to hold all these memories forever in our hearts.
