George Carl Bortz, 96, of Solon, died Friday, June 16, 2017, at Solon Nursing Care Center. Celebration of Life services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
George was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Homestead, the son
of Adam and Marie (Miller) Bortz. He married Loretta Lingel on Aug. 10, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. He began working at the age of 15 at Amana Society Farms, where he hand-milked cows, tended to hogs, installed fencing and picked corn. George and Loretta lived in the Solon area where they farmed for many years. He also worked for local farmers in his early years, Wilson Packing, and was on a road construction crew for a few years. His passion was farming. He enjoyed playing cards and being with his family.
George is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Bob) Welsh of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Patti Schott of Lisbon; his brother, Willard Bortz of Cedar Rapids; his brother-in-law, Wilbur "Bud" Lingel; and special family members, Malinda and David Poduska and Ambrose Poduska of Lowden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; son, Gary Bortz; sister, Vernice (Walter) Fruendt; and sisters-in-law, Maxine Bortz and Doris Lingel.
