Robert G. Zeman, 89, of Solon, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the Solon Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon, with burial in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel, 100 S. Cedar St., Solon.
Robert "Bob" was born July 1, 1925, in rural Solon, the son of Frank J. and Marie (Novotny) Zeman. He married Marjorie A. Reif on Oct. 9, 1946. Robert worked at Russell's Guide as a press operator for over 40 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Eagles and Moose Club in Iowa City and St. Mary's and St. Wenceslaus Catholic churches. Bob was a 25-year member of the Ely Volunteer Fire Department.
From 1945 until 1995, Bob's band, "The Iowa Rangers," performed and entertained throughout Eastern Iowa. He continued to perform and entertain at local care centers until 2010.
Bob was a member of Sons of the American Legion at American Legion Stinocher Post 460 in Solon, where he participated in the color guard and as a bugler at many military funerals and Memorial Day observances.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Cecilia Marie (Phil) Crowley of Texas; son, Robert A. (Lynne) Zeman of Solon; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
