ALVIN (ABE) ACHENBACH

Alvin (Abe) Achenbach, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Family may greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home with a Scripture service beginning at 3 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour before services Friday at the church. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Alvin, the son of Abner and Alice Schlamp Achenbach, was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Cedar County in Tipton. Alvin went to school in Morley. Throughout his career, he was employed by Anamosa Creamery, Jones County Gas & Oil and drove for several trucking companies.
In 1952, Alvin married Shirley Hansen. To this union they were blessed with four children, a son, Larry (Marcia) Achenbach of Marion; and three daughters, Debra (Vance) Wickham of Anamosa, Cindy (Kevin) Morris of Cedar Rapids and Cheryl (Randy) Nelson of Anamosa. The marriage later ended in divorce. In 1978, Alvin married Jeanette Flanagan. Together they cherished family times spent with their children, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Alvin is also survived by two sisters, Jean (Dean) Rekemeyer of Anamosa and Helen Hobel of Fayetteville, Ark.; one brother, Allen Achenbach of Anamosa; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arden and Vernon; three sisters, Dorothy Jean, Darlene and Joyce; a sister-in-law, Coleen Achenbach; brothers-in-law, Don Steele, Newell Meeks, Eldon Siefken and Lee Hobel; and his best buddy, his four-legged companion, Credo.
Alvin enjoyed camping, all types of music, cards, NASCAR, working in his garage, fixing things, helping others in need, doing word search puzzles, scratch tickets and morning coffee with friends.
On Dec. 12, 2012, the Christian Community of St. Jude Catholic Church joyfully welcomed Alvin into the Roman Catholic Church. Receiving baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist was a real celebration of his faith and one of his greatest achievements.
A memorial fund has been established in Alvin's name.
