Agnes "Mert" McElligott, 95, a resident of Crestview Acres Care Center, Marion, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at the care center. The family will greet guests from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Survivors include her three sons, Dennis (Kathy) McElligott of Cedar Rapids, David (Jill) McElligott of Bothel, Wash., and Mark McElligott of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Erin and Bailey McElligott, Misty (Randy) Newman and Valorie (Randy) Jones; and five great-grandchildren, Josh Newman, Daxton and Carter Burger, Keeli Walton and Tristan Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; son, Joseph; and brothers, Art, Bud and Earl Carlton.
Agnes was born May 20, 1919, in Woonsocket, S.D., the daughter of Elmer and Phoebe (Fee) Carlton. She married Francis "Frank" McElligott on May 19, 1944, in San Lorenzo, Calif. Agnes worked as a dietician at Crestview Acres for many years.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, and American Legion Auxiliary Post 692 of Ryan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Arc of East Central Iowa at www.arceci.org or to Hospice of Mercy at www.give tomercy.mercycare.org in Agnes' memory.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the Crestview Acres nurses and staff, Hospice of Mercy and special family friend, Connie Power.
