Iowa City's Gilmore heating up in Kannapolis

May. 25, 2009 3:55 pm
Chicago White Sox prospect and former Iowa City High prep Jon Gilmore has heated up at the plate after a very slow start this season at low-Class A Kannapolis of the South Atlantic League.
A 20-year-old third baseman, Gilmore was a first-round supplemental draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in 2007 who was traded to the White Sox organization this past offseason in a deal for major league pitcher Javier Vasquez. He hit .143 for Kannapolis in 19 April games and struck out 20 times in 70 at-bats.
But in May, Gilmore has hit .321 and struck out just six times in 78 at-bats. He has raised his season average to .236 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
Gilmore is generally regarded among the White Sox' top 20 prospects. He was an Appalachian League postseason all-star last season for Danville.
