McCalla, Marvel L.
Marvel L. McCalla, 88, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a short illness. Services: 1 p.m. on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Brenda Ehret will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include a son, William McCalla, and a daughter, Sharon Svoboda, both of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Lori Svoboda, Lenae Grade and Dave McCalla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; and her sister, Nadine Cerwick.
Marvel was born on Feb. 17, 1922, in Belle Plaine, the daughter of Joseph and Clara Fullmer Chudlic. She married Herman A. McCalla on April 5, 1957, in Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed dancing with her husband at the Eagles and the 100 Clubs as well as camping, fishing and going to the casino. A favorite gathering place was their cabin near Alburnett where they would fish and enjoy the outdoors. She attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist and was a member of the Fish and Game Club. Family was very important to Marvel, who will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
